We see ghostly shadows in Price’s photos, and outright madness in Case-Hofmeister’s “After the Assassination.” These are postcards of things we weren’t meant to see, things we won’t soon forget. We find hints of tension and unease: Curran Hatleberg’s nighttime shot of an elderly white couple glowering at a biracial couple in front of a garish, overgrown azalea bush. In them, we witness the malaise of travel: Rory Mulligan’s black-and-white images of an old-model sedan in different weather Justine Kurland’s photo of a shirtless man draped over a motorcycle. Presented at that scale, the pictures seem to hold secrets they require you to lean in and take a closer look. The wall opposite these large-scale projections is mostly blank, except for a series of postcard-sized photographs backed by aluminum and set on ledges like a distant line of train cars. ![]() Photo by Justine Kurland (courtesy the artist and Mitchell-Innes & Nash, New York) ![]() These videos push the boundaries of road photography by pointing to urgent motives outside of our romanticized vision of the open road and beyond the artist’s control. ![]() Johanna Case-Hofmeister’s 14-minute video “ Go By Feel” juxtaposes a scene of cowboys burning a mattress with a woman’s harrowing story of her mother running through the woods after being set on fire by her deranged boyfriend. “You walk down the street an innocent black man, and you getting stopped and frisked for no reason,” says an aspiring rapper rolling a blunt in the backseat of an SUV in Hannah Price’s 20-minute experimental documentary “ Blueprint” (2014). The photographs and videos in Anthology: Somewhere Not Here, the current group exhibition at Crosstown Arts, point to different reasons to light out for open territory, different types of journeys, and a different vision of the other. The idea is to locate something new - the “other” - that might illuminate or reinvigorate the things we thought we knew back home. ![]() The gaze is most commonly male, white, and aloof (think Robert Frank, Garry Winogrand, Alec Soth). ![]() Essentially, you make a larger-then-smaller request so that even if someone rejects it at first, guided by the reciprocity principle, they’ll give in to the next request. Robert Cialdini talks at length about it in his book, Influence. Whether people donate the recommended amount or not is a different matter, but, at least they have a number to adjust to.Īnother reason this strategy works is the operative rejection-then-retreat technique. The default contribution value works as an anchor, hinting it’s a popular option, thus making people conform to it. Notice how the folks at The Guardian manage that. ![]() After all, with people from behind the counter looking at you, you want to make sure you come across as a person with a big heart and an equally big wallet!īut unlike in the example above, it’s a good idea to take cognitive load off a customer’s mind. ![]() For example, wouldn’t you be suspicious if I propose selling you a brand new BMW whose actual price is $45,000, for $8,000? #2: Offer a SuggestionĮver noticed transparent donation boxes for various charities at checkout counters in stores and eating joints? How do you decide how much to give? My guess is you’ll look at the most popular bills in the box. Note: The Anchoring Effect can backfire if there’s a ridiculous gap between the original and discounted price. The offer becomes more persuasive with social proof used as a secondary anchor. Here’s an example from the Columbia website where the original price is struck off, anchoring users to consider the discounted price as a good bargain. And this is exactly the reason why we’re tempted to buy them for much less on sale. Expensive products, for instance, are assumed to be excellent quality, stylish, long-lasting, and hence worth buying. We often rely on the price of a product to determine its worth. #1: Display Original and Discounted Prices Next to Each Other Let’s look at how some brands use the Anchoring Bias to appear affordable and increase the perceived value of their products and services. Ultimately, this experiment proved Kahneman and Tversky’s prediction that people rely on the initial cue to make estimates, even though it may result in an error in judgment. What’s the reason behind this big a difference?īasically, faced with a time limit, participants quickly anchored to the product of the first few numbers of the mathematical expression (1x2x3=6 & 8x7圆=336), which then influenced their estimates: a smaller number for an ascending sequence and a bigger answer for a descending sequence. The first group’s median estimate was 512, while the second group’s median estimate was 2,250. Now, although the answer to both questions is 40,320, the groups gave different answers. In the above example, the leading anchor was the $150 price tag, which helped you make a price comparison and conclude that the $150 shirt’s a steal! Origin of Anchoring Biasīack in 1974, Kahneman and Tversky conducted a study in which one group of high school students was asked to estimate the result of 1x2x3x4x5圆x7x8, and the other group was asked to calculate 8x7圆x5x4x3x2x1. Think of it as a shortcut or heuristic our brain takes to speed up the decision-making process. Know why? Because of a cognitive bias called anchoring.Īnchoring is the fact that people tend to cling on to the first piece of information (or anchor) they encounter, and let their subsequent actions, such as estimates, arguments, and conclusions, be made in relation to it. What do you do next? You go back to your first find and buy it. However, determined to find something similar and cheaper, you continue with your search, only to find that other shirt prices range between $500-850. You check its price tag, and since you see it’s quite expensive – $150 – you put it back on the rack. ![]() After a minute of window shopping, you’re drawn to a fancy silk shirt. ![]() It has also been featured on the (former) TechTV show, The Screen Savers, on several occasions. One male (age not specified) was found to weigh 4.04 kg (8.9 lb). For adult Philippine eagles, the complete weight range has been reported as 4.7 to 8.0 kg (10.4 to 17.6 lb), while others have found the average was somewhat lower than the above range would indicate, at 4.5 kg (9.9 lb) for males and 6.0 kg (13.2 lb) for females. In many of the other large eagle species, the size difference between adult females and males can exceed 20%. The level of sexual dimorphism in size is not certain, but the male is believed to be typically about 10% smaller than the female, and this is supported by the average length provided for males and females in one source. The longest Philippine eagle reported anywhere and the longest eagle outside of the extinct Haast's eagle is a specimen from Field Museum of Natural History with a length of 112 cm (3 ft 8 in), but it had been kept in captivity so may not represent the wild individuals due to differences in the food availability. ![]() Based on the latter measurements, this makes it the longest extant species of eagle, as the average for the female equals the maximum reported for the harpy eagle and Steller's sea eagle. The Philippine eagle is typically reported as measuring 86–102 cm (2 ft 10 in – 3 ft 4 in) in total length, but a survey of several specimens from some of the largest natural history collections in the world found the average was 95 cm (3 ft 1 in) for males and 105 cm (3 ft 5 in) for females. Juveniles are similar to adults except their upperpart feathers have pale fringes. The heavy legs are yellow, with large, powerful, dark claws, and the prominent, large, high-arched, deep beak is a bluish-gray. The back of the Philippine eagle is dark brown, while the underside and underwings are white. The eagle has a dark face and a creamy-brown nape and crown. The Philippine eagle's nape is adorned with long, brown feathers that form a shaggy, manelike crest. The species has subsequently been placed in the subfamily Circaetinae. ![]() The species was included in the subfamily Harpiinae until a 2005 study of DNA sequences which identified them as not members of the group, finding instead that the nearest relatives are Snake eagles (Circaetinae), such as the bateleur. Evolutionary history Ī study of the skeletal features in 1919 led to the suggestion that the nearest relative was the Harpy eagle. Use of the name "Philippine eagle" in preference of "monkey-eating eagle" was the subject of an official government proclamation by then Philippine president Ferdinand Marcos in 1978. It has numerous names in the many Philippine languages, including ágila ("eagle"), háribon (from haring ibón, "king bird"), and banog ("kite"). Īpart from Philippine eagle and monkey-eating eagle, it has also been called the great Philippine eagle. This species has no recognized subspecies. This, coupled with the fact that the same name applied to the African Crowned eagle and the Central and South American Harpy eagle, resulted in a presidential proclamation to change its name to Philippine eagle in 1978, and in 1995 was declared a national emblem. Later studies revealed, however, that the alleged monkey-eating eagle also ate other animals, such as colugos, large snakes, monitor lizards, and even large birds, such as Hornbills. The species name commemorates Jeffery Whitehead, the father of John Whitehead. Upon its scientific discovery, the Philippine eagle was first called the monkey-eating eagle because of reports from natives of Bonga, Samar, where the species was first discovered, that it preyed exclusively on monkeys from these reports it gained its generic name, from the Greek pithecus (πίθηκος) ("ape or monkey") and phagus (-φάγος) ("eater of"). The skin of the bird was sent to William Robert Ogilvie-Grant in London in 1896, who initially showed it off in a local restaurant and described the species a few weeks later. The first European to study the species was the English explorer and naturalist John Whitehead in 1896, who observed the bird and whose servant, Juan, collected the first specimen a few weeks later. ![]() The following areas are covered porous materials, liquid hydrogen carriers, complex hydrides, intermetallic hydrides, electrochemical storage of energy, thermal energy storage, hydrogen energy systems and an outlook is presented for future prospects and research on hydrogen-based energy storage. The horse was used very little on the Western Front while the Germans and the Soviets were forced to de-modernize their armies by reintroducing the war horse to the battle field. The European war horse fought its last war in 1939. Despite this massive employment of recent mechanized technology, the war horse remained pertinent to European warfare due to the relative novelty of these innovations. Technology began its takeover of transportation and shock tactics during the First World War with the employment of the airplane, the tank, and the automobile on the massive scale. The invention of the machine gun and the automobile ended the war horse's monopoly on transportation and reduced the effectiveness of the European cavalries during the Franco-Prussian War and the Anglo-Boer War. During the American Civil War, the innovations of widespread railroads and higher powered weapons continued to remove the logistics of warfare from the hands of the war horse. Beginning during the Crimean War, the employment of recent technological innovations gradually edged the war horse out of its traditional use in shock tactics and transportation. They were also important status symbols and every knight wanted to own the best horse they could afford. The industrial revolution and the rapid advancement of technology that it fostered created a swift decline in the employment of horses in warfare. War horses were an important part of the knight’s equipment. Horse armor was also often decorated and showed the colors of the knight that owned the horse. The flanchards were typically attached to both sides of the saddle and had openings on the sides so the knight could use his spurs.Ĭrupper: The crupper (also called the croupier) protected the rear of the horse.Ĭriniere: The criniere was typically made of segmented plates which were placed around the neck of the horse. Trappers: Trappers, which were also known as caparisons, were usually made from leather or cloth and was draped over the back of the horse. There were different pieces of armor and each piece was designed to protect a different part of the horse. Armor for a horse typically weighed around thirty-two kilograms. Horse armor was actually more commonly worn during tournaments instead of in battle. The armour was made from boiled leather (cuir bouilli), padded cloth, or steel. Horse armor is called barding and the amount of armor on a horse really depended on the cost and whether the horse could handle the armor. A knight would also provide rounceys to his squires and other men at arms. It could be trained for war or used as a riding horse and was often used by knights who could not afford any of the other horses. The rouncey could be used as a pack animal or even on the farm. Many knights who did not have access to a destrier preferred to ride a courser into battle because it was fast, strong, and agile. They were not as well trained as either the palfrey or destrier but they also cost a lot less. They were often used by messengers as well as by people who needed to move quickly. Riding a palfrey was much more comfortable and was the favourite riding animal of noble women.Ĭoursers were fast horses and had good endurance. The palfrey was not as big as a destrier. Those countries that have subscribed to the Hague Convention for Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents, also known more concisely as the Apostile Convention (see list of countries here) require an apostile.
